For fancy dress ideas, I'd dress up as Spaceman Spiff. He's Calvin's alter ego. He represents all those endless hours of childhood we spend listening to and ignoring adults who just don't get us. He is always the hero, always ready with a new plan and always being interrupted by real life. He travels the galaxy finding new planets, getting into trouble and getting out of trouble. How cool is that? He has all the power that Calvin doesn’t have. Like every kid, Calvin feels powerless and needs help. Spaceman spiff gives him that power as he saves the universe. Dressing up as Spaceman Spiff would allow me to go back to childhood when I was always the hero and I outwitted all my enemies. Even when Spaceman Spiff is outwitted by the evil space lord (his teacher) he’s back in no time carry on with another adventure. Who wouldn’t want to be the coolest, bravest and most fearsome space explorer off all time. Plus you get to wear weird glasses and carry a funky space gun. |

I have a pair of Ariat paddock boots. They are black leather, ankle high, with a zipper up the front. In this weather, I should be wearing snow boots, and I even bought my husband some mens snow boots, I'll still be wearing my paddock boots. I should like to say I use them the ride, but I don't. In fact, I no longer ride at all. My horse threw me three years back tossed me into a wall and I shattered several bones in my left arm and leg. After the surgery, and the wheelchair, I bought the boots. They encase my titanium-encased bones, provide some good ankle support, stand up to the rain in this rainy west-coast city, and look stylish. In Chicago a couple of months back I had them polished by an expert shoe shiner. He made them look like patent leather. At first I was somewhat taken aback. They would appear plastic, perhaps, to an undiscerning eye. But after a day or so I thought they were more glorious than ever before. I need to go back to Chicago to find that shoe shiner. Polishing has become a somewhat large portion of my monthly expenses. |
